Chiara Tammaro (1997) werd geboren in Leeds, Verenigd Koninkrijk. Haar werk neemt de thema’s, esthetiek en functies van herkenbare voorwerpen over en in het maakproces combineert zij verschillende materialen en werkmethodes. Ze presenteert haar werk in de openbare ruimte zodat een breder en diverser publiek een interactie ermee kan aangaan. Zo blijft zij bij de kern waarom ze kunstenaar is: om een visueel begrip te creëren en barrières te doorbreken die bepaalde mensen uitsluiten om bekend te raken met de kunstsector.
Ze is zo gaan werken en denken tijdens haar studie aan Academie Minerva, omdat ze zich realiseerde dat ze moeite heeft met de scheiding tussen de creatieve industrie (voornamelijk beeldende kunst) en andere werkvelden. Ze wil dat meer mensen haar werk als kunstenaar als een echt beroep beschouwen, en niet als hobby of bijbaan. Dit is wat haar ertoe bracht om kunstwerken te maken die gebaseerd zijn op dingen waar een groot deel van onze (Westerse) samenleving zich mee kan identificeren. Alledaagse voorwerpen, dingen waar we als kind mee hebben gespeeld, en onze primaire behoeftes zoals eten. Dit is haar brug geworden naar de mensen die ze zocht: nog geen kunstliefhebbers.
Natuurlijk is het ook haar bedoeling om in contact te komen met mensen in haar directe omgeving en andere creatieve professionals, maar het geeft een heel goed gevoel als iemand buiten haar wereld zich met het werk bezighoudt, in positieve of negatieve zin. Want dan is er een dialoog ontstaan tussen verschillende percepties en achtergronden.
Onderdeel van haar artistieke praktijk is het opzetten en runnen van creatieve ruimtes voor kunstenaars om te werken. In 2019, na haar afstuderen, is ze samen met andere kunstenaars Stichting Moshpit Of Creation (MOC) begonnen. MOC is ontwikkeld om afstudeerders van Minerva van een studio te voorzien om hun artistieke praktijk verder te professionaliseren. De MOC huisvest 22 studio’s, een projectruimte, gemeenschappelijke werkplaatsen (hout, metaal, gips en drukwerk), en een repetitieruimte voor muziek. Een grote verscheidenheid aan kunstenaars werken in de ruimte en gebruiken het voor onderzoek, productie en werken samen met elkaar. Iedereen die een studio heeft, deelt zijn kennis en vaardigheden, zo leren we van elkaar. Verder helpen we elkaar met klussen in het creatieve veld, wat ons een sterk netwerk en collectief maakt.

Chiara follows these principles to remain true to the essence of her identity as an artist – creating a visual comprehension and dismantling barriers that exclude certain individuals from gaining familiarity with the art sector.
She chose these approaches during her studies at Academie Minerva when she recognized that at times, there was a challenge in distinguishing between the creative industry (primarily visual arts) and other hierarchical fields. Her aim is for a larger number of people in her surroundings to comprehend that her occupation is a genuine profession, not merely a hobby or secondary job. This rationale led her to create artworks based on objects that a substantial portion of Western society could connect with – items used in daily life, childhood playthings, and fundamental necessities like food. This served as her conduit to engage with the audience she sought – those not yet inclined towards art appreciation.
While her intention is to interact with individuals in her immediate circle and fellow creative professionals, she finds a sense of accomplishment when those outside her sphere engage with her work, whether positively or otherwise. At the very least, it initiates a discourse between different viewpoints and backgrounds.
A significant aspect of her journey towards becoming a freelance visual artist has been the establishment and management of creative spaces for artists. In 2019, following her graduation, she co-founded two non-profit foundations with fellow artists – Stichting Moshpit Of Creation (MOC) and Stichting HUL. Both initiatives were devised to support recent Minerva graduates who lacked accessible and affordable workspaces to continue refining their practices. Presently, she oversees the operations of Stichting MOC, which has evolved into a hub housing a project space, communal workshops (featuring wood, steel, plaster, and printmaking facilities), 22 private studios, and a music rehearsal area. Within MOC’s premises, a diverse group of artists work consistently, employing the space for research, creation, and cross-collaboration. Mutual sharing of knowledge and tools is actively encouraged among the members to facilitate their professional growth. Additionally, they frequently collaborate for tasks within the creative realm, providing one another with extra assistance when needed.
